Shoulder of Mutton – Vegan Breakfast Near Colchester
Shoulder of Mutton used to be a pub back in the day, but it’s now a tearoom, which it has been for about 4 or 5 years.
It’s on the outskirts of Colchester, set in the nice, relaxing countryside around Fordham / Aldham. It’s a good place to take family, dogs or kids, as there’s quite a bit of space outside and they also have a play area for children.
After losing a number of vegan places and options in Colchester, it can feel like a bit of a minefield trying to find somewhere to go, especially on certain days like Monday and Tuesday, when quite a few places aren’t open.
Thankfully, Shoulder of Mutton is open, and I think it’s also a good option for a Sunday day out.
They offer a number of vegan options, and you can even request a vegan afternoon tea. Since it’s a tearoom, I thought that was worth mentioning.
On this occasion, I had the vegan breakfast, which I’ve actually had before a couple of times, even before my vegan / plant-based days. I’ve always been a bit flexitarian before I even knew that was a thing.
The vegan breakfast comes with 2 sausages, 2 hash browns, 2 baked tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms and baked beans.
It costs £9.95.
Is it a mind-blowing breakfast? No.
Does it do the job? Yes.
It’s your usual good English-style vegan breakfast, and if you’re really hungry, you’ll definitely feel satisfied.
They also do lighter options like mushrooms on toast and beans on toast, which cost £4.50.
They do the usual dairy-free milks, including oat and soya. I had an oat milk cappuccino, although I think you do have to pay extra for the dairy-free milk, because apparently oat milk needs its own financial advisor.
I also tried the vegan roast here about a month ago, which I’ll cover separately another time.
So if you’re looking for a good little retreat just outside Colchester, Shoulder of Mutton is worth checking out.
