Pie Hole Pizzas Southend – Vegan New York-Style Pizza
Sadly, Pie Hole Pizzas is no longer around as a restaurant.
Pie Hole Pizzas was an all-vegan New York-style pizzeria in Southend, Essex. It was one of those places I kept seeing when I first joined Instagram, and I remember constantly drooling over their pizzas. Before that, I had never heard of them.
I’m really glad I did go, because the pizza was so good.
We went half and half with the person I was with. One side was Mac n Cheeze, mainly because it sounded different, and the other side was my trusty veggie-style pizza.
Little me would only eat veg if it was on a veggie pizza, so clearly I was doing health in a very specific and childish way. Veggie pizzas have always been one of my favourites.
What I loved about Pie Hole’s pizzas was how floppy they were. Usually, good pizza comes down to the dough, and this one was no different. It had that proper New York-style feel to it.
Both sides were good, but honestly, I wish we had gone fully Mac n Cheeze, because it was so good and somehow just worked on pizza. It sounds like it could be too much, but it wasn’t. It knew what it was doing.
I had loads of plans to go back to Pie Hole Pizzas, and then a few weeks later they basically vanished. It was a shame, because they were genuinely really good.
They were doing a pop-up on Tuesdays at Stoked Vegan BBQ towards the end of last year, and they have said they’ll be back.
So we’ll just have to wait and see.
