Pier One Frinton-on-Sea – Vegan Fish and Chips by the Sea

We visited Pier One in Frinton-on-Sea in November 2024.

At the time, I was scouting around Facebook for vegan fish and chips spots in Essex, and Pier One came up, so I thought I’d go and check it out.

Pier One later closed, and from what I heard, the owner had some health problems, which was a shame because it was a nice place inside and right by the sea.

It looks like it has reopened since under new owners, although from some of the reviews, the quality might not be quite the same. Whether they still do vegan options is another thing as well, so that’s worth checking before going.

I went for the banana blossom “fish” and chips, which definitely looked the part and hit that seaside fish and chips craving.

The batter had a nice herby touch to it, and out of the banana blossom fish and chips I’ve tried so far, this was probably the best one. I still think banana blossom tastes better in a curry from what I’ve had, but this was a decent version.

It cost £14.95, but I was sitting inside, and to be fair, it felt more like a restaurant than a standard fish and chip shop.

They also had other vegan options at the time, including jackfruit scampi, vegan sausages, and a vegan burger.

To be honest, that was more choice than you find in Colchester. I was half expecting the usual “you can only order the vegan menu at certain times” situation, but no — the full menu was ready to go.

I always find it funny how some of the quieter seaside spots seem to have more vegan options than the busier towns.

But there you go.
