Vegan Planet – All-Vegan Chinese Restaurant in Camden
It was my first time in Camden, so we had a good look around Camden Market first.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t exactly love having taster food pointed right in front of my face. It’s not an experience I’m used to, and my brain wasn’t really prepared for food being presented at me like a tiny edible threat.
So I was quite glad to walk away from that and pop into Longdan, an Asian supermarket I had never been in before. It was a really nice shop, with so many meat substitutes to pick from. Hopefully, we’ll get one in Essex one day.
We were already planning to go to Vegan Planet on this day, so it wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment thing. Luckily, Longdan was right beside Vegan Planet, so by the time we left the shop, we were starting to get hungry.
As it was Monday midday, there wasn’t anyone else in the restaurant. There were a lot of food deliveries going through though, with delivery riders popping in and out.
After having lacklustre service in other places when restaurants are quiet at midday, I have to give Vegan Planet credit. The guy kept his attitude professional and still gave proper service, which made the experience more memorable when I think back to it.
We ordered the pan-fried Chick’n dumplings, veg dim sum platter, special fried rice, and I went for something I hadn’t had before from the Sichuan dishes section: vegan fish in chilli oil.
The star of the show for me was definitely the vegan fish in chilli oil. It had so much flavour, and the chilli oil sauce was very hot. It certainly made me sweat while I was eating it, which is usually a sign that something has gone either very right or slightly too far.
The vegan fish had that fishy aroma I was hoping for, and I definitely didn’t regret ordering it. I used to be a big fish eater, so I do tend to go for vegan fish options if there’s one on the menu.
They do add a service charge, but that’s something you pretty much expect when you’re in London. We didn’t mind here, because the waiter did give proper service.
Next time, I’d probably order the Kung Pao, as that’s my favourite Chinese dish, and they do serve it here.
When I think back, the food here was honestly on par with Sen Viet, so Vegan Planet is definitely a strong one.
If you love Chinese food, or you used to love fish and want to try a meat-free version, Vegan Planet is worth visiting.
