Kimchi House Colchester – Korean Food With Vegan Options

Kimchi House is located at 2A Queen Street in Colchester. It’s a Korean restaurant, and we visited one afternoon on a Thursday in May.

I was met by a nice lady who seemed happy to help if you had any problems ordering. I knew what I was having though, because I’m one of those people who looks at the menu before going to the restaurant. Saves panic ordering, doesn’t it?

The vegan options on the menu included quite a few choices.

Vegan options on the menu

Starters included edamame, tofu kimchi, spring rolls in katsu sauce, and jap chae.

For pancakes, they had vegetable mandu, kimchi jeon, and yachae jeon.

Under street food, there was deep-fried rice cake.

For mains, the options included tofu bibimbap, kimchi fried rice, tofu kimchi jjigae, vegetable udon, vegetable Korean noodles, and mushroom buns with king oyster mushroom.

There were also plenty of side dishes, including tofu salad, seaweed salad, signature kimchi, mixed namul, layers of seaweed, and boiled rice.

I’m not sure it’s totally authentic Korean food, as I’ve heard some locals say it’s Chinese-owned. But to be honest, we all love going to an Indian or Chinese restaurant, and plenty of them aren’t exactly what people eat every day in those countries either. So for me, it’s nothing to be too concerned about.

I had the Tofu Kimchi Jjigae, and it was presented very nicely.

It’s a very spicy kimchi soup, so don’t order it if you can’t handle spicy food. It definitely had a bit of heat to it, which suited me, but it’s not one for people who think black pepper is risky.

I also had the tofu salad, which was really fresh and went well with the main. It was nice to have something cooling and refreshing alongside the spicy soup.

Overall, I’d say you probably get a better experience if you visit the restaurant rather than order takeaway. The food is prepared nicely, and it feels like one of those places where eating in makes more sense.
